To each its own. Why do they have to make comparison. They are two different persons altogether. Leave it to the experts.
If Chen Kaige (such a strict and articulate director) and Mei Baojiu (son of Mei Lanfang) are satisfied that Leon fits the bill, he must have possessed those quality.
Mei Baojiu is very supportive of Leon and stated that if the photo didn't turn out well enough, it's not Leon's fault, it's the fault of the makeup artiste as opera makeup is not as easy as it looks. Mei Baojiu also commended Leon for being a keen learner, very intelligent and fast at grasping techniques. He is very amazed at this young man and said that because of these qualities, those who are involved are very willing to teach him no matter what it takes.

Movie is now renamed : Forever Enthralled in English. Starting showing in china on Dec 5. Hope it sells well. Most critics agree Leon performed well in this movie but some nasty ones thinks he performs mediocrely. Those are really anti-Leon reporters.
Mr. Mei Baojiu (Mei Lanfang's son) especially thanked Leon for taking on the role and was so pleased with the end-result of the movie. He stated that Leon possessed all the qualities of his late-father - shy, charming, poised and very calm. Director Chen Kaige also defended Leon that what Leon has shown is not noticeable to some reporters as he portrayed mostly the inner feelings of the late Mei Lanfang. Though most thinks the young Mei Lanfang - Shu Shou Qing - performs better, but Chen Kaige stated that he should because he has been trained in opera since a young age!

I saw the movie yesterday. I'll say only this: Those who claim that Leon can't act, or that he was "a mistake" for the part, are wrong, very wrong! I was greatly impressed by his acting, also considering whom he had to play. It's not easy to have to personify someone like Mei Lanfang. I wonder, if those who say these things would have done any better?

You are the envious of all of us. We are still waiting. You know what, I realized those critics or reporters who said he couldn't act, are from China and all are out to promote their own chinese man - shu shao qiang, the young one. He was pretty aloof at the filming scene. I read a report that Leon was very nice to him, but he kept his distance from Leon. What a young snob!
But after almost a week, the audience have a different view -- 30% gave Leon 90 marks, 30% gave him 80 marks, and 30% said he performs to expectation and yes, there is always the 1% who thinks he underperforms. But overall, I read from forum, people who went to watch the movie agrees Leon did an excellent job and most also agree that his part is not easy to act.
That is why I never believe the critics and reporters, they have an agenda!

Of course you' re right and I agree absolutely with you! I also think, that the young man thinks to highly of himself. But he is only a newcomer. We must wait snd see, if he will last 20 years and be accepted at that time like Leon is!
